Announcing the 3rd release of Snakeoil OS - v0.1.3 ”Cable Lifter"! This update has several fixes and changes behind the scenes to improve the user experience. I reckon it’s a long list, so hit the forum post to see what’s changed). This release focuses on stability and improving the Snakeoil web interface. Hopefully with this stablised I can concentrate on the sound quality aspect.
The review for the Uptone JS-2 has been delayed multiple times due to issues beyond my control. A series of unfortunate events that included my primary DAC developing a fault at the worst possible time. The fault turned out to be a dry joint in the high voltage transformer. Kudos to the Don for the diagnosis and fix!
Unfortunately this long run of bad luck means my perspective on things will be cloudier than usual - any positives I write in this post will be over amplified, likewise the negatives under amplified. The JS-2 was also modified during the system down time. I have spent more time listening to the modified JS-2, and way less time with the stock JS-2. Most importantly, I havn’t auditioned all the PSU that’s available out there - the only PSUs I have tried are an ebay 12V5A SMPS, the HDPlex and this Uptone. Therefore please make sure you take all these into consideration when reading this article.
First up I’d like to show what modifications are made. Local DIY guru Don cut up the top plate of the JS-2 with his trusty CNC machine:
Thanks to Tasso now I have both the Jetway NF9C series - the 2600, and the 2800. The 2600 is my primary rig for the moment but I’d be playing with the 2800 in the future. Just need to order the parts to get everything together.
You’d know you’re on the right track when the Jetway folks have the same quirky sense of humour as me. Had to laugh at our first world problems when I read their instructions regarding how to upgrade the BIOS:
Click link above for Changelog. The website is still very disorganised at the moment, and I’m trying to juggle between updating the manual, creating videos, and fixing bugs.
Behind the scenes I have moved Snakeoil development to a version control, and 0.1.2a marks the first release from that. Things can only look better from now. Bear with me for a while as I try to get a proper bearing and a sense of routine, it will happen soon .
