Only because I wanted to get away from Windows 10 and didn't know where to go.  I started looking at Volumio and Raspberry Pi, but decided I would be better served keeping my machine and finding a system that worked within that hardware.  That led me to Euphony, which worked very well on first install, but the price is pretty outrageous for software that only runs audio. I did find the Euphony audio was not nearly as good as what I heard with SnakeOil or Daphile. 

That experience led me to search for an OS dedicated to audio, which puts SnakeOil at the top of the OS list.  I truly did spend 12 hours trying to make things work.  I tried BIOS changes and did lots of research on the issue.  I did find some threads on this forum which led me to realize what the problem was.  Sadly, I just don't have the time to lean Linux at this stage of my life. So, I need something that mostly works in the system I have. 

I love the possibilities with SnakeOil and will be following your progress.  The available instruction, FAQ, forum and overall explanations for this product are better than any I have seen thus far.  I did appreciate the fact that you run open source, which gives one a sense of 'safety' in the software.  If I knew anything about Linux and how to make changes this OS would be perfect.

Today, while I waited for your responses, I loaded Daphile. It was up and running in short order and I had no issues at all.  Sound is excellent from the little I have heard.  I have not done any critical listening, but plan to do so this week. 

I do love the dedicated system for audio. No Windows overhead and simple players. Keep up the great work and as I said, I will be looking for progress that will allow me to use JRiver with SnakeOil.

Again, thank you for all the help and your efforts in this worthwhile endeavor.

If we can get this to work permanently, I will then focus on getting HDMI to work and installing Jriver. 

These will be fixed in U8. The always mute feature, as well support for JRiver 25.

Will need to juggle things around as I'm in the middle of a big coding change on the Snakeoil WebApp atm.

Do you have any idea when U8 will be available? I am not happy with any of the other options I have tried and would like to use SankeOil and Jriver together.

Looking at the roadmap currently, I'm still just over 50% complete. As shown, scheduled for early Dec, but not entirely confident if I'll make it or not.

Has this problem been solved?
I am in the same boat - started testing volumio but didn't like it and finally found snakeoil os.
I am running it in VM on proxmox so worked 2 days to manage the audio passthrough.
I know a bit about linux but snakeoil as a custom distro is too advanced for me.
Finally I have reached to the point, where I could finally hear audio coming from a passedthrough onboard intel 200 hd audio, but only after I click SET VOLUME TO 100% in Snakeoil.
So the passthrough is there and works but needs unmuting.
I see, that things has changed through the years and a soultion offered to the original OP doesnt work anymore - there is no alsactl installed in snakeoil os now.
I have found alsa_unmute but when run, this is the output:

aplay -l says there is no sound card, but lspci -v shows:

I can see both outputs in snakeoil players - Analog and digital- haven't tested digital yet but analog works after setting volume to 100%.
Is there a current workaround for that?

Most of us on the forum do not have the deep technical knowledge to help. We tend to use external volume control on a real environment, not virtual. Unfortunately @agent_kith, the developer, has been focused on work, and not sure when he can reply to your query.

Apologies for late response. With your ALSA problems, for now, try and run this in the command line:

sudo apt install alsa-mixer

All the Snakeoil music players are custom linked to a custom built ALSA, but it seems that custom built is broken somehow. Music players will work fine, and when you install the above ubuntu package, so will the standard ALSA utils tools. (Note you may need to reboot)

As for 100% volume,  there are various types of volume control - software volume control (SVC), attenuator, and digital volume control (DVC).

SVC is basically volume control performed in software, attenuator is kind of volume control in hardware, and DVC is kind of a digital version of an attenuator.. SVC is basically the worse of the lot as it really kills the sound (for the lack of a better description), attenuator is apparently very good but I find it has a very highish  noise level (and it wears out?), DVC is kind of in the middle I guess. That's a grossly over-simplification but I hope you get the idea...

The idea is to have volume set to 100% to preserve bit perfection, then use another volume control to adjust the volume.

bit perfect = no change from input. If you use SVC, the output bit depth should in theory go from 16 bits to 24 bits, and sometimes even 32 bits for lower volume (I don't think bit depth will go beyond 32 bits).

I'm actually pretty angry (or maybe depressed?) for the past 4 weeks and nearly resigned today.. That may still happen eventually as I'm not convinced after a special meeting I asked for this morning. At the end of the day I've made the decision that my mental health will come first (I guess putting food on the table isn't that important any more ). Right now I've lost the motivation/drive to continue working after I'm home, I've kind of don't even want to turn on the computers now. 

But hopefully that'll mindset will change and I can go back to 2-5 hours of Snakeoil work after work.
